Section 5: Beyond the OGT: Helping Students Achieve Success
Encouraging Student Engagement
Encouraging students to take responsibility for their academic progress can be challenging, especially at the secondary level. One way to engage students in their learning is to explain how their academic performance is relevant to their lives both in and out of school. Three ways educators can help students develop a more holistic understanding of what it means to succeed in school and beyond are working with students to help them:
- discover how they learn best and what strategies complement their particular learning style;
- understand their academic performance and use these data to set concrete, short-term goals based on their performance and their learning style; and
- explore potential future careers and develop a plan to work toward the career of their choice.
